The WHO has recommended exclusive breastfeeding up to 6 months. From the 6th to 12th month, breastfeeding with the introduction of solid food (in the period from 17th to 26th week).
Cow milk is NOT recommended in the 1st year, but the formula adapted to the age. In the 2nd year, the priority is also given to formulas for that age..
A new foodstuff should be introduced gradually during 3 – 4 days. Two new types of food should not be introduced at the same time, once introduced foodstuffs can be combined.
A meal is given in liquid – mushy state, and in the end of the 1st year, chopped up and kneaded.
In the end of the 1st year, the child should have in its menu three main meals and two snacks, after which it can be breastfed.
Solid food is given using a teaspoon.
Do NOT add salt to food – vegetables contain enough salt, and there is no need to add it in the healthy infant’s food.
Vegetable oil as an addition to vegetables (’’a drop“ of olive oil for taste from the 7th month on).
Adding sugar to food and drinks is not allowed, as it leads to development of tooth cavities, obesity and diabetes.
In the 1st year, the child SHOULD NOT BE given (due to possibility of appearance of an allergic reaction): strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, kiwi, honey, fresh tomato, walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts (it goes for flips with peanuts as well), chocolate and chocolate spreads, egg-white, shellfish, canned fish, other food with preservatives (sausages, salami…), yeast, spices. Give with caution (better not before full 9 months): oranges, lemon, grapefruit, tangerines.
The body weight of a healthy child in the 1st year increases rapidly: in the 1st month, a newborn gets 750 – 1000 grams, in the 2nd some 850 grams, in the 3rd around 700 grams, in the 4th around 600 grams. In the 5th month the body weight at birth is doubled, in order to be tripled in the end of the 1st year. If the child’s weight does not increase in the 2nd and 3rd week, it is necessary to consult a paediatrician at the counselling centre that would search for the cause of the baby not developing. Food is introduced according to the paediatrician’s advice and an individual menu is recommended for each baby.

CHILD’S NUTRITION DURING THE SECOND YEAR
Breastfeeding can be continued after the 1st year as well, but in this period it does not represent a main food for the child. Breastfeeding is on demand, after the meals, usually 2 to 3 times a day. The quantity of fruit, vegetables and other food taken by the child depends on its appetite, daily activity and needs, and should not be limited. The child eats together with the rest of the family (the family adapts to the baby’s taste and eats less seasoned food). No drinks should be taken during the meal. After the meal, the child can drink water, tea or fruit juice without sugar as much as it wants. Milk and dairy are limited to up to half a litre per day. Sweets, chocolate and biscuits should be fully excluded for as long as possible.
